Green Hills is a Nashville neighborhood rather than a city of its own, part of Metro Nashville and Davidson County, about fifteen minutes south of downtown along Hillsboro Pike. The pike carries the shopping, from the Mall at Green Hills up past Abbott Martin Road, and the residential streets fan out on either side: Woodmont Boulevard, Hobbs Road, Estes Road and Glen Echo Road, with Woodmont Estates and the gated Sugartree neighborhood tucked in between. The houses are a mix that few Nashville neighborhoods can match, 1940s cottages, 1950s and 1960s brick ranches on generous lots, and new construction that has replaced many of them over the past twenty years.
That mix shapes what owners commission. A family in a mid-century ranch usually wants the kitchen opened toward the living room and real closets carved out of what the original plan gave them. A family in a new build wants the builder's cabinetry replaced with something proportioned to the house, a pantry that works and a media wall that hides the equipment.
What do Green Hills homeowners usually ask us for?
Kitchen remodels in the 1950s and 1960s ranches lead the list. Those kitchens were built as separate rooms with a door to the dining room and eight-foot ceilings, so the work often involves removing a wall, adding a run of cabinetry along the new opening and fitting a pantry where the old broom closet stood. Owners tend to ask for drawers rather than doors below the counter, a dedicated coffee or bar cabinet, and a finish that sits well with original oak floors.
In the newer houses on Hobbs Road, Estes Road and around Woodmont Estates, the request is different: the kitchen is already large, but the pantry is a room with wire shelving, the closets are builder-grade, and the family room has a blank wall waiting for a fireplace surround and built-ins. We build walk-in pantries with counter-height landing space, closet systems with drawers and adjustable hanging, and media walls that carry the television, the components and the books in one composition.
What is different about working on a home in Green Hills?
Lots are the constraint. Green Hills sits on rolling ground with mature trees, and many properties cannot add square footage without giving up a yard or a tree, so storage has to come from inside the existing footprint. That favors floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, closets built into former hallways and the space under stairs, and garage storage that gets bikes and gear off the floor. Green Hills is also Metro Nashville, so permits run through Metro Codes rather than a separate city hall, and we plan the schedule around that.
The look
The kind of work we bring to Green Hills
Can you remodel the kitchen in a 1950s ranch house in Green Hills without adding on?
In most cases, yes. Mid-century ranches usually have a separate kitchen beside a dining room or den, and removing or shortening that wall gives you a larger, open kitchen within the same footprint. We design the cabinetry around the new opening, add a pantry cabinet where the old closet was and keep the ceiling height honest with correctly scaled uppers.
Do you install custom closets in newer homes in Green Hills?
Yes. Many houses built in Green Hills over the last two decades came with wire or particleboard closet systems that do not match the rest of the home. We replace them with built-in hanging sections, drawer stacks, shoe storage and shelving made in our shop and finished to suit the room, without touching the finished walls beyond the closet itself.
Is Green Hills part of Nashville for permitting purposes?
Yes. Green Hills is a neighborhood within Metro Nashville and Davidson County, not a separate city, so any permit a remodel requires comes from Metro Codes. Cabinetry and closet installations generally do not need one; structural, plumbing and electrical changes do, and we tell you which applies to your project before it starts.
